Charles City Lady Panthers place 8th at Group 1A/2A Region A championships

Charles City’s Derequa Johnson finished third in the girls’ triple jump as the Lady Panthers placed eighth in the Group 1A/2A Region A Indoor Track and Field championships held Feb. 14 at Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton.
Johnson leaped a distance of 32’8” to earn a right to the Group 1A/2A state championships that will be held on Feb. 28-29 at Liberty University. Johnson ran the anchor leg of the girls’ 4×200 relay team consisting of Jaida Braxton, Taniyah Williams, and Jaela Smith, who ran a state qualifying time of 1:55.95. Johnson also finished fourth in the girls’ 55-meter dash with a time of 7.76.
Williams placed seventh in the girls’ 55-meter hurdles (10.77), while teammate Zaniyah Chavis placed eighth in the girls’ shot (24’2”).
The Lady Panthers score 16.5 points at the regional competition. The boys’ team did not score at the meet. Bruton’s boys’ and girls’ team won the championships, respectively.
