New Kent’s Trojans played a close contest at Grafton earlier this year, winning 7-5. The May 1 match-up was closer, but still ended up with the same result.

The Trojans edged the Grafton Clippers 3-2 in the Bay Rivers District match-up, sweeping the season series.

Action was tied at two apiece in the bottom of the fifth inning when New Kent’s aggressive base-running paid dividends. With the bases loaded and two outs, Tyler Warren hit the ball towards shortstop. Grafton was able to scoop the ball up and throw the ball to third base. However, the aggressive base-running by Thomas Wilson allowed him to reach the base safely. That effort also pushed Carson Seely across home plate, providing the hosts a 3-2 advantage.

Grafton attempted to comeback, with their best effort taking place in the top of the seventh. However, three ground balls led to routine plays by the Trojans, allowing them to close out the contest.

New Kent Head Coach Trevor Ronan commented about his team’s play as the win streak increased to seven.

“I am feeling good about our team and what we’ve been doing,” he said. “It’s always next man up and today, Thomas [Wilson] did what’s best for the team making that hustle play, as well as our pitchers doing a great job.”

New Kent improves to 12-3 on the season.
