The stakes just got higher at Colonial Downs and the Virginia Derby in New Kent.

Churchill Downs Incorporated, along with several Virginia dignitaries, announced that the Virginia Derby will now act as an automatic qualifier for the Kentucky Derby starting in 2025.

The Virginia Derby, typically held in September, will move to March 15, 2025, anchoring a four-day Spring meet event. The race will transition to the dirt track at Colonial Downs, with the winner earning a berth to the 151st Kentucky Derby on May 3, 2025, at Churchill Downs Racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky.

“Churchill Downs has worked with partners throughout the Commonwealth to reinvigorate Virginia’s proud legacy of thoroughbred racing and secure our place as a world class destination for racing fans and equine talent from around the world,” said Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin. “The future for thoroughbred racing in Virginia has never been brighter and this opportunity will allow us to shine on horseracing’s biggest stage.”

Colonial Downs plans to have 47 racing days in 2025 pending approval of the Virginia Racing Commission.
