The Aug. 28 home opener for New Kent’s Lady Trojans field hockey team was filled with excitement and even play with the visiting Mechanicsville Lady Mustangs. But it would be a score from Bailey Borszich that proved to be the difference-maker to give the hosts their first win of the year.
New Kent defeated Mechanicsville 2-1 in overtime, allowing the Lady Trojans to put a win on their record.
The Lady Mustangs were unable to capitalize off three penalty corners, as New Kent goalie Brianna Otey denied all three attempts. Meanwhile, the second quarter opened the scoring for the hosts, as Olivia Allen would take advantage of a penalty corner of their own, knocking the ball into the back of the goal for an early 1-0 advantage. That lead would last through the halftime intermission.
In the third quarter, Mechanicsville was able to find a spark on the offensive side, with Avery Pierce providing a score to knot the game up at one apiece at the 7:51 marker of the third quarter. Through the remainder of the third quarter and the fourth quarter, both teams couldn’t muster up any additional scores, with goaltending by Otey keeping the hosts in the contest entered overtime.
In the extra session, New Kent gained possession of the ball early and began sprinting down the field. The bold dash allowed Megan Fly to make a pass to Borszich, who scored the game-winning goal just 51 seconds into the extra frame.
After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach Cristen Sickal spoke about her team’s victory.
“We couldn’t capitalize in the fourth unfortunately, but I new we had it as soon as the whistle blew sending us into sudden death overtime,” the victorious coach commented. “My girls shine in seven versus seven [overtime] and I had all the faith in the world in them.
“Brie (Otey) had several amazing saves keeping us in the game,” Sickal continued. “I am proud of the program tonight, and I am excited to see what the rest of the season has in store for us.”
New Kent improves its record to 1-1 on the year.
