Automated speed cameras for Charles City school zone enforcement operational beginning Dec. 2
Charles City County Sheriff’s Office will begin its initial trial for using automated speed enforcement cameras in Charles City County Public School speed zones.
Beginning Dec. 2, the warning period will begin, allowing drivers to have a one-month adjustment to get used to the changes in the area. Warning summonses will be sent to violators during that time frame. Live enforcement will begin on Jan. 6, with motorists who exceed the school zone speed limit by 10 or more miles per hour receiving a summons by mail. These summonses carry a fine of $100.
According to a March 2024 study, 1,573 violations were recorded over a five-day study period of those who sped in the Charles City school zone. Of that number, 631 were 15-20 miles per hour over the limit, while 426 were 21 or more miles per hour over the limit.
The current speed limit in the Charles City school zone is listed at 35 miles per hour, but may change based on the study and number of violators during the warning period.
