Basic baseball continues to get it done for the New Kent Trojans.

Behind a shutout by Joshua Sorrell and three hits by Brody Cash, New Kent defeated the visiting Colonial Heights Colonials during the June 4 contest, advancing them to the regional finals and earning them a berth in the state tournament.

In the bottom of the first, a deep single by Cash drove in the home team’s first run of the contest. In the bottom of the third, Grayson Hobson and Andrew Staskiel reached base for the Trojans, setting up Michael Hetzel’s base hit to drive in another run. A sacrifice fly by Tyler Warren allowed Staskiel to tag up and trot across home plate for a 3-0 lead.

After New Kent escaped the Colonials’ bases-loaded situation in the top of the fourth, the Trojans made them pay in the bottom half of the frame as they brought home run number four after Cash’s double. Cash sealed the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning, as his solo home run put the home team on top to stay.

After the contest, New Kent Head Coach Trevor Ronan couldn’t be happier about his team’s performance.

“Every single one of the boys made an impact today,” he commented. “Now, it’ son to the next one and I couldn’t ask for more from this team.”
