Leonard chosen as New Kent Public Schools ‘Teacher of the Year’

New Kent County Public schools announced their 2027 Teachers of the Year, with George Watkins Elementary School teacher Amy Leonard being recognized as the Division Teacher of the Year.
Leonard, a second-grade teacher at George Watkins Elementary School, has more than 31 schools of service to New Kent County Public Schools. She has inspired generations of students through her patient, kind, and inclusive approach to teaching. Leonard was praised by her peers for being an invaluable leader with the school community, a mentor to new teachers, and a collaborative partner who consistently elevates instructional practice.
“Ms. Leonard embodied the very best of our profession through her consistently patient, kind, and loving approach to every student in our school,” commented George Watkins Elementary School Tammy Krejcarek. “Her classroom is a true model of an inclusive learning environment where every child feels seen, valued, and encouraged to succeed.”
In other recognitions for New Kent County Public Schools:

Sabrina Dunn, a special education teacher, was chosen as New Kent’s Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year. Dunn was recognized for her compassion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of every learner she serves.

Katie Freemen, a second-grade teacher, was selected as Quinton Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year. She was chosen for the honor due to her ability to create a caring, inclusive classroom where students feel safe, supported, and motivated to learn.

Patrick Kimrey was selected as New Kent Middle School’s Teacher of the Year. A seventh-grade English teacher, he was recognized for his enthusiasm, creativity, and innovation to the school, inspiring students and colleagues alike.

Joshua Bell, a history teacher, was selected as New Kent High School’s Teacher of the Year. Bell was selected due to his excellence through engaging instruction, deep commitment to students, and creating a classroom where students feel safe, valued, and supported, creating meaningful learning experiences.
