The uphill battle for Charles City’s Panthers continued Monday night as they welcomed the visiting Maggie Walker Dragons. And while Charles City continue to figure out what they need to do to turn the season around, it was clear that a lack of defense along with missed assignments plagued the home team.
Maggie Walker cruised to an 83-25 victory over the Panthers, keeping Charles City winless on the season.
The Dragons opened up the scoring with a quick basket, but Charles City responded after a James Harris IV free throw. But from that point on, the visitors executed a full-court press, frustrating the Panthers. Behind scoring from Grand Tong and Quinn Redwine, Maggie Walker executed a 28-6 run to close out the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Dragons had little issue using dribble penetration to get to the basket against the Panthers’ defense. By the time halftime arrived, Maggie Walker led 51-15 over Charles City.
The third quarter saw the visitors execute an 8-1 to kick off the quarter. The scoring drought ended for the Panthers as Harris converted a tough lay-in despite getting fouled. But in the end, the Dragons continued to overwhelm the hosts as they coasted to victory with very little resistance.
After the contest, Charles City Head Coach De’Quantae Mason tried to be positive, but said his team needed to be unified and have pride every time they step on the court.
“The players have to communicate better and box out,” the coach commented. “Simply put, we just have to play better.”
Harris led Charles City (0-8) with 14 points. Joseph Simms contributed four, Aiden Cash tossed in three, and the duo of Joshua Harrell and Damian Zuidema chipped in with two apiece.
