Richmond man receives 13 months for assaulting officer, battering health care worker
A Richmond man will spend more than a year in jail for multiple assaults in New Kent County.
Christopher Scott Call, 31, of the 300 block of Knight Drive, entered no contest pleas to one count each of assault and battery on a law enforcement officer and misdemeanor battery on a health care worker as part of a plea agreement reached Monday morning in New Kent Circuit Court. One additional count of assault and battery of a law enforcement officer and one charge of misdemeanor public intoxication were dropped as part of the agreement. A no contest plea indicates that evidence presented during the trial would be enough to convict the defendant of the offenses.
In a summary of evidence provided by New Kent Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott Renick, on July 17, 2025, a New Kent deputy executed a traffic stop on a vehicle that had a driver who was suspected to be driving under the influence. After the stop, one of the passengers, later identified as Call, indicated he had trouble breathing. Emergency personnel were called to the scene to treat Call, who began to become agitated. Call punched one of the workers treating him in the stomach before he was placed in a wheelchair. While being pushed down a ramp in the wheelchair, Call attempted to bite a police officer. Call missed biting the deputy, but he hit the deputy in the side with his attempt.
Under the agreement, Call received a five-year sentence with four years suspended (one year to serve with six months being a mandatory minimum) on the assault and battery conviction on a law enforcement officer and a 12-month sentence with 11 months suspended (one month to serve with two days being a mandatory minimum) for battering a health care worker. He must also pay $1,000 in total finals.
In other circuit court matters:
— Steven Lamont Brooks, 44, of Charles City, had seven counts of distributing a Schedule I/II substance (third or subsequent offense) dropped. Those cases are expected to be prosecuted at the federal level.
–Eric Smith, 36, of the 3800 block of Bolling Road, Richmond, had one charge of possession of a Schedule I/II substance dismissed after successfully completing the First Offender Program.
