New Kent baseball remains undefeated with an 11-1 win over Smithfield
New Kent continues a strong start to its 2026 baseball campaign.
Behind a one-hit, eight strikeout performance from Jonah Sorrell, New Kent captured an 11-1 victory over the visiting Smithfield Packers in Friday afternoon’s baseball contest.
It wouldn’t be until the bottom of the fourth inning when the scoreboard began to light up for the Trojans. A base hit by New Kent’s Dylan Bowman drove in two runs to give the home team a lead they would never relinquish.
Smithfield countered in the top of the fifth inning, as Alex Santana crossed home plate for the Packers. But the bottom of the frame saw the visitors chance for victory go downhill fast. With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Smithfield had no choice but to pitch to New Kent power hitter Lane Boyette. The senior made them pay, with a two-run double that increased the Trojans’ advantage to 4-1. A passed ball allowed another Trojan to cross home plate.
Runs continued to cross the plate as Jonathan Hochman’s two-run base knock to up the home team’s lead to 8-1. Additional hits from Brody Cash and Jaxon Foreman pushed New Kent into double figures (10-1). In the bottom of the sixth, Hochman’s hit in the bottom of the sixth pushed Keegan Branch across home plate for the final score and force the mercy rule.
New Kent remains undefeated with a record of 4-0.
