New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ softball team continue to challenge themselves. And continue to win.
New Kent defeated the visiting Atlee Lady Raiders 14-4 in a non-district affair, extending their win streak to six.
Kendall White started things off for the Lady Trojans in the bottom of the first with an RBI single. Sierra Carter connected with a two-run double for the home team. Vyktorya Otey’s single provided the Lady Trojans a 4-0 advantage heading into the second inning.
Atlee punched their way onto the scoreboard with a run in the top of the second, but RBI’s by Mariah Leonard and Kenley Rowe increased New Kent’s lead to five (6-1) by the end of the second inning.
Timely defense by New Kent kept Atlee in check. In the bottom of the sixth inning, a sacrifice fly by Carter drove home Rowe, ending the game via mercy rule.
After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans’ Head Coach Maria Bates spoke about the victory.
“Atlee is a Class 5A school, a much bigger school,” she said. “We kept things in gear, and we have a young but talented team who has bought into the program.
“With our two seniors leading, it shows our culture and they lead the team,” Bates added. “We have younger leaders as well and it’s great to see everyone picking each other up.”
New Kent improves to 6-1 on the season.
