The constant improvement for New Kent’s boys’ soccer team is becoming evident. Friday night’s contest against the visiting Nansemond River Warriors proved to be a step in the right direction for the Trojans.

A late goal from Owen Agee along with a Diego Jimenez penalty kick proved to be decisive scores as the Trojans went on to a 2-1 victory in the non-district contest.

For most of the game, neither team could find the back of the net due to great goalkeeping and defense. For New Kent, Noah Barnett’s goaltending efforts did not allow for a score until a late penalty kick.

On the other hand, the Trojan offense had difficulties putting the ball in the back of the net themselves. It wouldn’t be until 4:33 remaining on the clock when Agee weaved through defenders and placed a shot in the goal to give the hosts the lead. Two minutes later, Jimenez stole the ball and was tackled on a breakaway shot attempt, resulting in a penalty kick. Jimenez found the back of the net, leading to a 2-0 lead.

Nansemond River would not go away, as they were awarded a penalty kick with less than a minute remaining. The Warriors scored, slicing the home team’s lead in half. However, clock along with extra time would expire, allowing the Trojans to capture their fifth win, the most they’ve had since the 2019 season.

New Kent improves to 5-2 on the season.
