Letter to the Editor: Says new cell phone policy has improved school environment

As a student in Virginia finishing my second year under the statewide phone-free school policy, I’ve seen its effects up close. While many of us were annoyed at first, the change has already made a noticeable difference in how our schools function.

Before the policy, phones were the biggest distraction in almost every class. Even students who wanted to stay focused struggled because whenever someone pulled out a phone, teachers had to pause the lesson to address it. This constant cycle of interruptions took away valuable learning time.

The Virginia Education Association highlighted this problem, noting “Among the teachers we surveyed, 78 percent shared that cell phones are distractions in their classrooms and 84 percent believed the new cell phone policy would be appropriate for their school.” This makes it clear that most teachers view phones as a barrier to learning.

Phones also made cheating easier, especially with new technology. With technology advancing so quickly, the timing of this policy has been important. Since it began, classrooms feel calmer, more focused, and more engaged.

The policy has also helped the social environment at school. The no cell phone policy was issued when I was in sixth grade, when phones were still allowed, most students spent lunch and in between classes staring at screens instead of interacting. Now, without phones, more students talk, make friends, and build real connections. Social skills have improved, and the school feels more like a community again. The policy has also reduced cyberbullying during the school day and prevents students from secretly recording others, which used to create unnecessary stress.

I hope our community continues to support this policy. Limiting phone use during school hours helps protect students’ focus, confidence, and overall well-being, creating a healthier environment for everyone.
