After falling short of a state playoff berth last year, New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ soccer team looked for redemption and a second chance at the big dance.
New Kent had no threat from the visiting Heritage Lady Hurricanes, routing the visitors 18-0 in the May 29 Region 3A quarterfinal contest.
The Lady Trojans scored early and often, led by Gretchen Smith who added a hat trick in the first half of the game. New Kent continued to place the ball in the net over and over again, leading to a massive 14-0 lead at the halftime break. The Lady Trojans added four more goals after the intermission as the game ended via mercy rule.
After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach Stella Follett spoke about the program’s turnaround.
“I am excited for these girls,” she said. “They have worked their hearts out and they deserve to go as far as they can.
“I am very proud of this team having the chance to qualify for the state tournament,” Follett concluded.
