Charles City School Board Member Royce Paige succumbs

A Charles City School Board member who served more than two decades in the position during two different stints has passed away.

Royce Paige, 82, who was serving as an at-large member on the school board, passed away last week according to a press release from Charles City County’s School Board.

Paige served 23 years as a member on Charles City’s School Board, covering two stints. Paige was first elected in 1995 to represent District 1 where he served for 16 years until 2011. In 2019, he successfully ran for one of the two at-large positions, serving in that role until his untimely passing. During his time on the board, he served as chairman of the Southside Regional School Board for two years and as their vice-chairman for two years, as well as on the panel for the National School Board Association.

“It is with deep sadness that Charles City County Public Schools shares the passing of Mr. Royce Paige, a dedicated member of our school board and a steadfast advocate for the students, families, and community of Charles City,” the school district said in a press release. “For more than two decades, Mr. Paige faithfully served on the Charles City County School Board, offering his wisdom, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the success and well-being of our students.

“His dedication to public education and to the Charles City community leaves a lasting legacy that will not be forgotten,” the statement continues. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Paige’s family, loved ones, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. We keep them in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Paige was known for his passion of providing equal opportunities for students despite their educational background and location. He often championed for funding for teacher raises, as well as expanding curriculum to provide students more opportunities.

“I want to get out in the work and make sure the children of Charles City County get the best education,” Paige said during his 2023 campaign. “I believe no child should be left behind.

“I would like to give more of my time in the office for the better of our children in Charles City County,” he continued in his statement on his stance. “I want to bring their education up and pass the national level of education in this country.”
