Gloucester opens contest with four goals, coasts past New Kent

New Kent’s Lady Trojans field hockey team opened their home slate by hosting a Gloucester Lady Dukes team that consisted of University of Richmond commit Charlotte Houtz. And for the visiting Lady Dukes, all that attention on her made it easier for her teammates to score.

Five Gloucester players found the back of the net as they coasted to a 6-0 mercy rule victory over New Kent during the Sept. 8 Bay Rivers District matchup.

The Lady Trojans’ defense played well for the first 10 minutes in the quarter before Gloucester’s offense quickly changed momentum in the contest. Goals from Alya Fernandez and Emily Farrar of the Lady Dukes in less than 90 seconds apart quickly provided the visitors a 2-0 advantage.

Gloucester’s aggressive nature also led to several penalty corners. Kendall Thomas converted one at the 4:10 mark, followed by Madelyn Rowe’s score at 2:45 as New Kent found themselves trailing 4-0 heading into the second quarter.

Houtz didn’t have to do too much for the visitors, but she did add a score four minutes into the second quarter as Gloucester carried a 5-0 lead into the halftime break. An additional goal in the third quarter triggered the mercy rule, sending the Lady Trojans to their second consecutive loss.

After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach Erin Borszich commented about her team’s setback and their competitive nature.

“Our first two games were tough,” she commented. “We had a tough first quarter, but our second and third quarters were solid with more opportunities.

“With five seniors and a young team, I am proud of their effort in the last two quarters,” she concluded.

New Kent falls to 0-2 on the season.
