Surry County shuts out Charles City in shortened football affair

Charles City High School’s football team used to have a long-standing rivalry against the Surry Cougars when both teams played in the same district. And while the match-up continues as non-district opponents, the battle has favored the Cougars for several years, including last Friday’s matchup.

Surry dropped 32 points in the first quarter before coasting to a 40-0 victory over the Panthers in a game that ended shortly after the beginning of the third quarter due to a shortage of players for Charles City.

Surry had very little problems with Charles City, ripping off big plays against the hosts as they orchestrated score after score. Charles City’s best effort came on a drive late in the second quarter, but Surry’s defense stuffed the Panthers at the 20-yard line.

Two plays later on offense for the visiting Cougars, Isaiah Shaw carried the ball 80 yards for the visitors, leading to the 40-0 halftime advantage. After returning from the intermission break, the game was stopped in concern for the safety of Charles City players who were playing with a depleted roster.

Charles City falls to 0-3 on the season.
