While the name of New Kent County Animal Control Pound sounds like a sad place, it is actually a heartwarming example of what a difference caring people make!

Kennel attendant Melissa Henry and the animal control deputies make a real difference every day between life and death for so many dogs and cats. They go beyond the call of duty to seek medical help and find new homes for animals in their care. They collaborate with New Kent’s Humane Society, local rescue groups, and veternarians to make miracles happen every day.

Our county pound in 2012 had an intake of 388 cats and dogs, and only 23 of those animals had to euthanized. That’s less than a six percent rate, whereas other Virginia counties euthanization rate exceeds 50 percent. Our county animal pound stands out in the midst of those grim statistics as a shining example that a hard working, caring, devoted staff can make a true difference.

Caring personnel of New Kent Animal Control are true heroes of our community who work out of love for animals.Melissa’s exceptional commitment to the cause is a true inspiration and I hope that our community will come forward this Christmas season and recognize the miracles she and other workers perform every day. The facility is always in need of community support and I believe that this holiday season is a great opportunity for all of us to say a heartfelt thank you to those individuals.

It is a great time to stop by the pound with a donation or to see if you would like to give a “fur-ever” home to a dog or cat in waiting. I’m sure Melissa or a member of the staff will be happy to introduce you to the dogs and cats that are under there care.

Merry Christmas to the New Kent Animal Control Pound and thank you for your outstanding service!
