World War II: Freedom Calls New Kent

New Kent World War II veterans (front, l to r) Clifton "Boogie" Davis, Temple Pomfrey, Otis Timberlake; (back, l to r) Harry Mountcastle, Jimmy Ward, and Norm Thomsen were among those honored Saturday during the New Kent Historic Commission's "World War II: Freedom Calls New Kent" event held at the county's Historic School. The event honored all World War II veterans, including those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. In the photos below, Cory Fox and Ian Anderson, both from King William County, dress in military attire of the WWII period and set up camp. Simulating an exercise in the field, Anderson mans a .50 caliber machine gun while Fox in full combat gear takes aim with a M-1 rifle. Veterans view one of several displays of military collectibles while the Fort Lee band entertains with music from the 1940s, and in the last photo, visitors inspect displays honoring New Kent's African-American veterans of the war set up inside the nearby Rose & Crown Restaurant.
