Charles City to host coastal flood risk open house

By Community Member | July 22, 2014 9:22 pm

Charles City County will hold a public coastal flood risk open house on Monday, Aug. 25, at Charles City Social Center.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) released updates on Feb. 10 to notify citizens of changes in the coastal areas of the county and insurance companies who use FIRMS (Flood Insurance Rate Maps) to determine rates. As a result of these updates, some buildings in the county may be included in the high-risk flood zone for the first time and may result in mandatory purchase of flood insurance.

Representatives from the state and county will be present at the open house, as well as FEMA representatives. The open house will use interactive flood maps to assess the risk of flooding, answer insurance questions, and explain the preliminary map.

Using interactive flood maps at this Open House, representatives from the State and County, as well as FEMA and their mapping partners, will be available to answer flood risk and insurance questions, and explain the preliminary maps.
