Ruthville cornerstone dedication

Above, Sam Smith (left) and Alton Washington (right) unveil a cornerstone from the original Ruthville High School at a dedication ceremony on Aug. 28 at Charles City High School. The ceremony, occurring exactly 85 years to the day of the groundbreaking of the original Ruthville High School, displays a placard (below) of the original high school's history and the journey of instruction for African-American students. Ruthville High School was one of the first permanently established high schools for black students, teaching pupils from the counties of Charles City, New Kent, Prince George, Surry, and Sussex.
