Adkins named Eastern Region essay winner

Vanessa Adkins, a senior at Charles City High School, has been announced as the Eastern Region winner of the Strong Men and Women Essay Contest sponsored by the Library of Virginia and Dominion Virginia Power.

Students were required to write an unpublished 400-word essay reflecting on the heroism of one of the 2015 “Strong Men and Women” nominees Sgt. William H. Carney, a Norfolk-born Civil War soldier and first African-American Medal of Honor recipient.

Adkins’ essay was chosen as one of four winners in the state. She will be reading it on Feb. 4 in front of distinguished educators. She received an Apple iPad Air for her essay, while Charles City High School received $1,000.
