New Kent Sheriff’s Office received several awards as part of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police recognitions during a Jan. 12 presentation. Among awards won by the organization include first place in the 2014 Virginia Law Enforcement Challenge (departments with 1-25 deputies), third place in the National Law Enforcement Challenge (departments 1-25 deputies), and honorable mention national commercial vehicle enforcement. The awards are distributed on standards set by sheriff’s offices based on education at local schools, child safety programs, and participation in national enforcement programs such as “Click It or Ticket.” Accepting the award on behalf of the sheriff department are (l to r), Deputy Gerry Simpson, Lt. Lee Bailey, Sheriff F.W. “Wakie” Howard Jr., and Lt. Jamie Hamby. At far right is award presenter Dana Schrad, executive director of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police.
