Local middle school students win New Kent Lions Club art contest
Christian Stewart, a seventh grade student at Charles City Middle School, and Haley Cleaver, an eighth grade student at New Kent Middle School, have been recognized by New Kent Lions Club as local winners in an international art contest.
Christian’s and Haley’s posters were among 450,000 submitted worldwide in the 27th annual Lions International Peace poster contest. Their posters were selected for qualities of originality, artistic merit, and portrayal of the contest’s theme “Peace, Love, and Understanding.” Christian’s and Haley’s posters were judged in November 2014 by Dr. Hal Wallof and Lucy Sawyer of Sawyer’s Art Studio in New Kent.
“It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them,” said New Kent Lions Club president Mary Edward. “I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.”
Christian’s and Haley’s posters will face international competition, with a grand prize of $5,000 awarded to the top winner and 23 merit awards of $500 awarded. Contestants and winners may be viewed at www.lionsclubs.org.
