Letter to the editor: Asks NK supervisors to aid local theater group
At the last Board of Supervisors meeting, the President of New Kent Stagehands asked the board to allow the group to manage and use the stage at the Historical School. This dedicated group of community theater performers have performed for New Kent residents in adult and children’s plays, murder mystery dinner theaters, sang at the county fair, performed at historical events, and participate in holiday activities. They perform these events for free, and give their time to do so. They pay for their costumes and spend numerous hours rehearsing just to bring enjoyment to our community.
For 12 years, the only venue they have used is the middle school auditorium, but only if it was available. After each play rehearsal and performance, they clear the stage of walls and props only to set it up again for the next rehearsal or performance.
I understand that New Kent County has a budgeted amount that goes to Arts Alive in West Point along with several other counties. Wouldn’t it be better to support New Kent than outside interests?
The Stagehands are not asking for money, just a permanent venue and management rights for exclusive use of the stage at the Historical School. With Stagehands managing the use, they would be able to schedule and monitor other groups who wish to use that area. A permanent sign could be displayed in front of the building to not only post upcoming plays but to advertise community events.
Please, supervisors, don’t ignore this treasure that has been placed at your feet by people who care and are committed to the arts. I’m afraid that without your support and commitment, their opportunity to continue and to grow will eventually be lost and the victims of that loss will be us, the residents of this county.
Look around and see how many counties have a community theater. The answer: all of them!
