Chickahominy Tribe celebrates with 64th annual pow-wow Sept. 26-27
The Chickahominy Indian Tribe will join Native American friends and visitors from all over the country when they gather for the 64th annual Chickahominy Fall Festival and Pow-wow on Saturday, Sept. 26 and Sunday, Sept. 27 at the Chickahominy Tribal Grounds, located at 8200 Lott Cary Road, Providence Forge, VA, in Charles City.
Grounds will open at 10 a.m. on Saturday with grand entry commencing at 12 p.m., and will re-open on Sunday 11 a.m. with grand entry beginning at 1 p.m.
The festival/Pow-Wow will feature Native American dancers, drummers, singers, and cultural demonstrations. United States Armed Forces Veterans will be honored each day. Vendors will have traditional Native American items for sale that include jewelry, pottery, beadwork, and more from around the United States. This year, visitors will have an opportunity to experience the culture of the Eastern Woodlands’ Indians, one of the tribes that was established and to make contact when English settlers arrived in 1607.
Keith Colston of the Tuscarora/Lumbee tribe will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Host drum is Medicine Tail from Alabama and Maurice Proctor of the Piscataway Tribe will be the Arena Director. Will Richardson of the Haliwa-Saponi is the Head Male Dancer, Ashton Montez of the Chickahominy will serve as Head Female Dancer, Keenan Stewart of the Chickahominy will be the Junior Head Male Dancer, and Kathryn Soule of the Upper Mattaponi will be the Junior Head Female Dancer.
The festival is open to the public. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted at the gate. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome. Pow-Wow etiquette will be followed. No alcohol, drugs, or pets are permitted on the Pow-Wow grounds.
