Letter to the Editor: Does not appreciate unauthorized use of name in campaign
I am a life-long resident of Charles City and love my county. I have demonstrated this love for many years by being involved and supporting issues that I believe will benefit the majority of our citizens and not a select few.
The recent campaign to build a public library in Charles City is one issue I do not support at this time. However, there has been a letter dated Oct. 12 circulated to the households in Charles City that lists my name as a supporter of the bond referendum for the construction of this library. I was approached by a member of the Charles City Library Campaign committee to sign a document stating I supported the bond referendum. I refused to sign the document, sharing with the individual that I felt Charles City needed many other things at this time, including enhancing schools for our children. I also indicated that if taxes were going to be increased, it should be for the support of our school system.
I take pride in the fact that many citizens value my opinion and seek my thoughts on voting matters in the county. I want to assure citizens that I stand firm of my decision not to support the bond referendum for construction of a public library at this time. I am very disappointed that we have a group of citizens that would publish other citizen’s names in support of something without their permission and then claim it was a mistake. I am confident that those who are supporters of this library have not shared all the facts with those who did in fact sign the document of support.
I encourage all citizens to carefully consider how they will vote Nov. 3 on this issue and the candidates. Being tricked is certainly no treat.
