Jackie Smith, president of New Kent Coatings Inc., received the nation’s premier award for excellence among women’s business enterprises (WBE) bestowed by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) during its Salute to Women’s Business Enterprises on March 19. The annual gala convened with more than 1,500 corporate and government executives, WBEs, and members of the WBENC’s Regional Partner Organizations (RPOs). “I am honored to receive this award and grateful for all of the support I have received from the WPEO-DC, WBENC, my team, customers, friends, and family,” Smith said in a press release. USDA finalizes procedures for sorghum referendum

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is announcing procedures for the upcoming referendum regarding the continuation of the Sorghum Checkoff Program. The Sorghum Promotion, Research, and Information Order requires that a referendum be conducted no later than seven years after the start of assessments, which began on July 1, 2008. For the program to continue, a majority of those voting must favor continuation of the order. USDA will conduct the referendum beginning Mar. 23 and conclude on Apr. 21 at county USDA Farm Service Agency offices. Ballots may be obtained in person, by mail, or facsimile at county FSA…

‘The Calico Tiger’ to be presented by NK Stagehands on Apr. 25-26

New Kent Stagehands will present “The Calico Tiger” written by Christian B. Garrison during a two-day event beginning Saturday, April 25 and concluding Sunday, April 26. The one-act children’s play will be presented at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a 3 p.m. performance on Sunday. All shows are scheduled to take place at New Kent Middle School.
