Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma offers youth award

Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma is pleased to announce through fundraisers, the organization will sponsor a $100 Youth Service Award to a New Kent student. The award is to recognize a youth in the community that exemplifies leadership and community service. To be eligble, a student must be a resident of New Kent and recognized for outstanding performance in the areas of volunteer community service and school-required service activities. Applications are available at each of the New Kent schools’ guidance offices, or by calling Brenda Johnston at 932-9423. Applications are due by Mar. 5.

Local middle school students win New Kent Lions Club art contest

Christian Stewart, a seventh grade student at Charles City Middle School, and Haley Cleaver, an eighth grade student at New Kent Middle School, have been recognized by New Kent Lions Club as local winners in an international art contest. Christian’s and Haley’s posters were among 450,000 submitted worldwide in the 27th annual Lions International Peace poster contest. Their posters were selected for qualities of originality, artistic merit, and portrayal of the contest’s theme “Peace, Love, and Understanding.” Christian’s and Haley’s posters were judged in November 2014 by Dr. Hal Wallof and Lucy Sawyer of Sawyer’s Art Studio in New Kent….

Letter to the Editor: Chastises decision on changes to site plan process

A great blow was dealt to the business community by New Kent’s Board of Supervisors at the Feb. 9 meeting. A change made was explained to “help” the site plan process, but its adoption had the effect of stripping authority from the planning department. Before the change, a site plan applicant could appeal to the agent if there were minor adjustments needed to be made and could work through them, avoiding log jams in the process. Virginia Burn Law goes into effect Feb. 15

The 75-day spring wildfire season in Virginia begins Sunday, Feb. 15, when the 4 p.m. Burn Law (which allows burning only between 4 p.m. and midnight) goes into effect. “Wildfires in the Commonwealth are very weather dependent,” said state forester Bettina Ring. “Low humidity, dry fuels – such as leaves, grass and tree limbs – and gusty winds are prevalent this time of year. Even a relatively small fire can quickly get out of control and spread fast.” Ring said that 37 percent of wildfires that occur in Virginia each year are caused by people burning trash or debris. Parsley to serve as leader at YADAPP conference

Eric Parsley, a New Kent native and current student at Christopher Newport University, has been tabbed to serve as a leader at the Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Project (YADAPP) summer conference. Sponsored by Virginia’s Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), the conference is aimed to empower young adults to become involved in keeping their community alcohol and drug free. Parsley’s selection is unique because he becomes the first intern in the program to serve as a top leader. He will occupy the role at the conference held at Longwood July 20-24.
