As a native of New Kent County and longtime resident, I strongly support Amy Crump for New Kent Circuit Court Clerk’s position and encourage you as well. I have known Amy for many years. She has over 17 years of dedication to the New Kent court system and that experience would be invaluable as circuit court clerk. Amy is well organized, has proven attention to detail, and the ability to communicate with our citizens and all who use the clerk’s office. She is also gifted in the knowledge of technology to help move the clerk’s office forward while preserving our…

District 2 is lucky to have Kristin Swynford as a write-in candidate for New Kent County school board. I have worked with Kristin on many different committees. Her work ethic is impressive with strong organizational and leadership skills. She has a calm demeanor, listens carefully, communicates effectively, and bases her decisions on sound analysis. Kristin is truly excited about serving New Kent since she believes the schools have exciting opportunities ahead and great potential for continued success. Kristin has the energy and focus needed to help our county schools make important decisions in changing environments. We are so fortunate to…

Recently, Charles City’s board of supervisors amended the county policy concerning political activity by employees. The policy serves to “ensure and to maintain employee’s individual rights free from interference or solicitation by fellow employees, supervisors, or officials.” Among other things, the policy prohibits the use of any county resource or equipment for political activities. While attending the last meeting of the board of supervisors during normal working hours, one member of the board parked his truck with a large campaign sign affixed to it in the county parking lot where it was plainly visible to employees and members of the…

As a concerned citizen, parent, teacher, and volunteer in the community, I want to see our community move forward with the relocation of the New Kent-Charles City County library. Charles City has begun discussions of having a library in their own county. New Kent needs to move forward with the proposal on the table to have the library in the central location of the Maidstone development. The location of the building is key! It is close to three of the county’s four schools, it has more adequate parking than the current location, it is very visible to the community from…

Donna Williams can win the position of treasurer for New Kent! She is highly qualified, having worked in the treasurer’s office for ten years. She is well liked and respected, and I know she will serve New Kent and its citizens beyond reproach. Beverly Sparks New Kent
Four years ago, a hurricane left Woodhaven Shores with hundreds of trees laying in our roads and crushing our properties. It was impossible to drive from entrance to another within our neighborhood. One month later, a tornado swept through a portion of Woodhaven, leaving a trail of destruction. Our little community of 480 homes looked like a war zone. It was devastating, to say the least, and we faced a daunting financial challenge. As the manager of Woodhaven POA and a resident, I pleaded for help from the county, state and FEMA. I was told that because Woodhaven is a…

The referendum on the Charles City library is a non-binding advisory referendum. A “yes” vote is not a vote to raise taxes; the board of supervisors will be doing that anyway to fund their capital improvement plan, which does include the library, but not for another several years. By that time, we’ll have paid off enough debt to cover the service of the library with existing revenue. Rather, a “yes” vote is a vote to support improved education for our children and grandchildren. It is a vote for access to programs to help seniors with their medical and financial questions….

I write today to support Charles Gardner who is seeking the elected position of sheriff of New Kent County. I also have concerns regarding the current workings in the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office. I want citizens of New Kent to know about the unethical practices of this public office. There is an intolerable amount of nepotism, favoritism, and unprofessionalism being practiced in the current administration. Our family was touched personally with actions unbecoming to a publicly funding professional department that is suppose to be structured to serve all citizens. Our family has seen first hand the negativity that permeates…
