A hero among us

New Kent Bus Driver Earl Clayton (right) is recognized by New Kent Superintendent of Schools David Myers for his heroic efforts on Feb. 25. On that day, a tree fell across the road and landed on the bus Clayton was driving. The fast-thinking driver sped up the bus, helping minimize the impact and even out the distribution of the weight of the tree across the bus. Clayton's efforts, along with his comforting of children, saved 21 lives with the only injuries being minor scrapes and bruises to three elementary students. Clayton was praised by peers and received a standing ovation during the school board's Mar. 7 regular meeting.Andre' Jones photo
