Fifteenth year of remembrance

Above, a multi-jurisdictional union of police officers and firefighters salute during the annual Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony held on Sept. 9. Rescue personnel and first responders from New Kent, Charles City, Henrico, West Point, and the VIrginia State Police unified and read the names of all the firefighters and police officers who gave their lives on that day, followed by a toll of the bell 15 times, one ring for each year that has passed. A timeline of events was read by New Kent County Sheriff Joe McLaughlin Jr. and Fire Chief Rick Opett, as well as the happenings of the social world at that time, as part of the ceremony to remind the public how the events of that day united the community and country as one. At bottom, an honor guard commences the presentation of colors to begin the ceremony.
