Letter to the Editor: Says CC library should be stand alone facility
“… the Charles City Courthouse is probably the most sophisticated surviving example of the small group of arcaded front colonial courthouses. The county seat has never been commercially developed, causing the courthouse to retain its isolated setting at a country crossroads, much as it was in colonial times.” -National Register of Historic Places Inventory Nomination Form 1968.
The proposed attachment of a modern library building to the historic courthouse would be a desecration of a unique piece of Virginia’s actual and architectural history. It is also a violation of the will of the people of Charles City County, expressed by the previous Board of Supervisors’ memorandum of understanding in which they, including two present Board members, agreed to build the library in the field at the end of the road. It is the most natural place to put the library. No other location will as well serve the needs of the residents of Charles City.
I am steadfastly opposed to any proposal which entails an alternate location for the library.
