Letter to the Editor: Thanks constituents for continuous support
Continuing in service as your state Delegate to the Virginia General Assembly is a great honor and privilege. My family and I were deeply humbled by the impressive victory given to us on Election Day. These results provide us the encouragement to continue to work hard to represent all residents of the 97th District with grace and dignity which you have come to expect. Please accept my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all my volunteers who spent hours going door-to-door, and especially to you, the voters, for your overwhelming support.
I attended the annual House budget committee retreat in Portsmouth. Balancing our state budget will require a continued emphasis on conservative, prudent budgeting, as well as a focus on cost savings and efficiencies across agencies and services. While the economy is showing signs of sustained growth, Virginia’s revenue levels remain sluggish at present.
It is still my hope that Federal tax reform would further boost a robust marketplace; however, our primary budgeting goal will be to ensure consistent funding for core services and programs while strengthening our revenue reserves for any potential economic down-turn. Weak revenue growth and disruptions from the federal government including the failure to reauthorize funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) or continued defense spending cuts pose significant challenges.
I remain committed to fully funding the Standards of Quality and will work to ensure that each of our counties receives its fair share of state aid. Our children and those who educate them deserve the best educational system we can provide. In closing, please keep our Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, the legislature and my family and I, in particular, in your thoughts and prayers as we try to resolve these weighty matters in the best interests of your family, our district and the Commonwealth.
