Letter to the Editor: Opposes possible casino in New Kent

By Community Member | April 29, 2018 4:30 pm

With news of the land purchase in New Kent by the Pamunkey Indian Tribe for the possible purpose of establishing a casino, I would ask citizens to consider this: Would you choose to buy a home and raise your family in a casino community?

Some questions that should be asked now rather than later include what will be the impact of residential home values as local residents attempt to flee the casino? What will be the demand for rental units and low-income housing? Will surrounding subdivisions become rental communities for the estimated 4,000 service workers? What will be the impact on social service programs, crime, and public safety? What impact will lights and noise from casino events have on our residential community and lifestyle? How will the casino impact Bottoms Bridge traffic, which is a primary access point for many county residents? Are these 4,000 jobs at minimum wage? Do we want New Kent to be known as the home of truck stops and casino gambling? Should we expect better?

Members of the Pamunkey Indian Tribe are always welcomed in New Kent. However, a casino is not welcome. The recent announcement of the land purchase in the Quinton area of Route 249 has resulted in great concern throughout our community. So please, consider locating your project where it will be welcomed.
