Homeowner’s association revives Brickshire Golf Course

When a person thinks about golf, they think of a gentlemen and ladies’ game that is defined by class and prestige. But when the threat of golf courses being shut down in New Kent arrived, one homeowner’s association elected to save the one in their area.

Brickshire homeowners bonded to purchase the Brickshire Golf Club in 2017, after being on the market for more than one year. The course, along with Royal New Kent and Stonehouse, were put up for sale in April 2016.

While other potential buyers proposed transforming the course into a conservation property, the homeowner’s association came into play and wanted to keep the Brickshire property as an area where people could dine for lunch or dinner. After meeting with members of the community and homeowners, they received consent to pursue purchasing the course.

Homeowners gathered with property owners, receiving the two-thirds vote they needed to purchase the property. Valued at $2 million, the association acquired a $1.4 million loan. The transaction allows the course and restaurant to be owned by the Brickshire Community Association, and the residents are responsible and in control for upgrades of the property.

Part of the reasoning for the homeowner’s association stepping in is to keep property values up. With the fear that the course and clubhouse being chained and fenced off, Brickshire homeowners are paying $300 more in dues to subsidize the loan cost. The Wingfield Golf Management group has been hired to keep the courses up to par.

Upgrades don’t end at the course, as the clubhouse received an investment of $100,000. New golf carts and maintenance equipment were also part of the funds being invested into the facility. The restaurant and golf courses have reopened and are available for public use.

Restaurant hours are 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sunday. For more information about the Brickshire Golf Club, call 966-7888.
