Editorial: Charles City and New Kent are two different counties

When you live in two communities that intertwine on a regular basis, they often are compared to each other in a variety of areas. But let me say it like it is: Charles City and New Kent are two different localities, and that’s not a bad thing.

My interactions within both counties allow me to hear talk and see comparisons of what residents of one jurisdiction think about the other. Examples of this include educational systems, government efficiency, business opportunities, and much more. But instead of these two counties (that I do enjoy) being compared, each of them offers their own unique perspective of what they have to offer.

Example one is the population of the localities. In New Kent, approximately 20,000 people call the county home while Charles City tips the scale just over 7,000. Residents in New Kent appreciate their homes, but they often complain that it is building up too quickly with businesses in certain areas. In Charles City, the quiet nature offers a calm and quiet demeanor, but a lack of businesses means a deficiency in revenue.

Example two can be emergency services and crime rate. In Charles City, the reported crime rate is statistically one of the lowest in the state of Virginia (note I said “reported”). In New Kent, officers are kept going responding to several calls of alleged criminal offenses multiple times an hour. In Charles City, there are currently no paid firefighters to service the county while New Kent does have employed workers.

Example three that is often spoken about is the school systems. Charles City offers smaller class sizes due to student population, while New Kent schools may have bigger class sizes, but they offer more offerings. Activities after school for Charles City kids are at a minimal currently (such as recreation programs), but the ones that are offered usually see students participate in more than one activity. In New Kent, there are several programs available for the students to take part in, but the offerings and multiple choices can overwhelm if only one selection is chosen.

As you can see, Charles City and New Kent has its pros and cons. While making comparisons will never end, I believe that misconceptions of places can lead to a lack of understanding. There will always be differentiating opinions about places, businesses, and the very fun question of “Where should I live at?” Each locality currently draws in different types of consumers, new residents, and businesses based on the location.

Both counties will have its strengths and weaknesses, but the most important thing that each citizen of the county is entrusted in is letting local leaders know which way you want their county to grow. The only thing stronger than a county making moves to become a better place is the voice of those who can make a difference by speaking up and making Charles City and New Kent the best place for all, whether it’s as a citizen, visitor, or native.
