Opening of Rosie’s Gaming Emporium marks return of Colonial Downs

Seats were filled to the brim at historic horse racing machines as part of the grand reopening of Colonial Downs on Tuesday.

The definition of a new era is something fresh and new that brings change the can be the betterment of all. That day was Apr. 23, 2019 for Colonial Downs as it opened the doors to Rosie’s Gaming Emporium in a process that brought the track back to life after closing its doors on Nov. 1, 2014.

After 1,634 days, the grand opening of the brand new facility that is home to 600 historic horse racing machines, welcomed guests as lines and crowds filled the area. With a fresh look at its bar and eating areas revamped, the commitment put into the gambling style parlor became one of spectacle as it’s the first of its kind in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

“What an exciting day for New Kent County and what an exciting day for the Commonwealth. Colonial Downs is back!” exclaimed Nate Miz, Director of Marketing for Colonial Downs. “There are a lot of smiling faces, a lot of exciting guests coming in today, and this is a great experience for horse racing fans.”

The original Colonial Downs only featured horse racing with limited gaming at the end. The new setup, however, will feature big time horse racing on limited dates beginning in August along with the gambling experience.

“We have simulcasting on the third floor and a brand new bar,” Miz continued. “With the great food and smiley faces, people are just overall happy that Colonial Downs is back.”

Patrons commented that the new experience is better thanks to a blend of music and televisions on the wall. Excitement also hit the air as two jackpots of $3,500 each were hit on day one, while a $25,000 jackpot also sent bells whistling throughout the facility.

Colonial Downs and Rosie’s Gaming Emporium has begun a new era in Virginia, one that they hope continues to bring in customers as it looks to keep its commitment to racing, gambling, jobs, and overall fun for adults.
