Letter to the Editor: Says it’s time for Peace to move on from 97th District

A few years ago, Chris Peace knocked on my door and asked me to support him. I asked him where he stood on term limits and he just smiled because he had been in office for more than 10 years. He didn’t answer the question, but immediately assured me he was a second amendment supporter and generally opposed abortion. I voted for him and felt good about it. Not anymore.

I was in a room with him in March when a discussion was held about an upcoming Republican convention for the 97th District. Final preparations were underway, and he had an opportunity to speak. He voiced no concerns about the process. Then, two days before the convention, he announced it was illegal and improper. What happened? He learned many of his former supporters were unhappy with extensive and cozy relationships with lobbyists and developers at the expense of the concerns of his constituents.

Back in 1829, U.S. President Andrew Jackson noted, “Every man who has been in office a few years believes he has a life estate in it, a vested right.” He went on to write, “It is a rotation in office that will perpetuate our liberty.”

I remain unhappy with the time and energy Delegate Peace put into introducing “virtual” betting on horse races and do not believe his efforts are going to improve the quality of life for most New Kent County residents. When his children get older, will he encourage them to frequent the new gaming parlors? Does anyone believe the machines are not rigged in favor of the gaming establishment and their political allies?

Time is up for Delegate Peace and the seat he sat on for too long that has gradually corrupted him and so many others.
