Change made in process to start business in New Kent

A key change to start a new business in New Kent County became effective Jan. 1, 2020.

New businesses based in New Kent must register their fictitious business or trade name with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC). New Kent County’s Clerk of the Circuit Court will no longer accept new certificates of assumed or fictitious names.

The new requirement is the result of an amendment adopted by the Virginia Assembly (Code of Virginia, Chapter 59.1-69). The New Kent Clerk of the Circuit Court will continue to accept filings for cancellations of certificates if the original certificate was filed in Loudoun County.
