The Martha Dandridge’s Woman’s Club in New Kent has decided to end its membership after 84 years of existence.

Named after the first First Lady of the United States, Martha Dandridge Custis Washington), the club was formed in 1936 as a way to show responsibility of characteristics of their namesake. Those characteristics include helping families and community members, as well as bettering education.

The club conducted events such as immunization clinics, taught crafts, held various fundraisers such as bake sales and fashion shows, and used the funds raised to create scholarships for New Kent High School seniors. Approximately 80 women had been part of the organization. A junior club for women under 30, known as the Nellie Custis Woman’s Club, was spawned because of their efforts. Both clubs were a part of the Virginia Federation of Women’s Clubs.

As a parting gesture, the membership sold the “little” school house they purchased to hold meetings in that served also as a historical museum. The funds from the sale, approximately $60,000, will be awarded to graduating New Kent seniors in the amount of one $2,000 scholarship each year for the next 30 years. All other remaining funds from other fundraisers will be donated to New Kent Fire and Rescue, New Kent Humane Society, Bridges of Change, New Kent Special Olympics Area 6, New Kent Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity, The Salvation Army, Dreamcatchers, and Christmas Mother (LaSertoma).

Members of the club thank those who supported the organization over the years and wish all healthy and blessed years to come.
