Letter to the Editor: Says Charles City is not the place to move to if you want convenience

As a Charles City resident, I built my home in 2016 after moving from New Kent County. After moving, the first thing we encountered was no reliable internet and no cable service. Cell phone towers seem to be few as I can only get one or two bars and had many dropped calls. In New Kent, we had good service of all three.

Since I didn’t have any school children and retired, I made do by getting everything from two satellites that cost $185 a month. I am resigned to the fact that if I want groceries, drug store prescriptions, or a quick meal, we are obliged to travel to New Kent where retail businesses are blooming like Spring flowers.

New Kent County has a good school system and several growing neighborhoods of new homes that are encouraging businesses to locate. As far as I know, Charles City has few, if any, new neighborhoods being built. It would appear that unless Charles City encourages more businesses to locate here, it will stagnate and will be the county of old plantations. Businesses provide jobs as well as taxes, so do new houses. But if anyone with children looks into possibly moving to Charles City, I think the answer would be “no thank you.” Not when they can choose New Kent a few miles away.
