Editorial: Remembering the importance of taking time for yourself

By Andre Jones | April 27, 2021 11:28 am

Here is some advice that even I need to take; make sure you take time for yourself.

Similar to what people are doing today, I always wanted to grow up so fast. I wanted a job, my own money, and my freedom. I didn’t want to be constrained by following rules and not being able to go as I please.

But now, I look back and wish I could have cherished that time when I was younger.

While I’m no longer held back by the rules of the household I grew up in, I am held in check by the rules of society. Don’t pay a bill, you will get called by a collector. Don’t make it to work on time, you will be reprimanded for it. Those are just small examples of how life can be sidetracked almost immediately.

But with all those responsibilities and freedom, there has to be a point where you can find some way to relax and reflect. We all grow up in different environments, different rules, and different expectations. Some people grow up where if they want something, it is gifted to them. Some of us had the experience the ordeal that if you want it, work for it.

There are times where we need to relax and slow down at times. As people, we cannot continuously burn ourselves out or stress about factors that are beyond our control. There are instances where I keep going nonstop and I can consider myself a functioning workaholic. And when I do get a break when I’m not working, I feel completely lost because of the inactivity.

The comprehension of why we do these things will always be a mystery. But one thing that has been solved is that we need our personal time. From going to a spa to being groomed to even sitting on the back deck and getting a tan, we have our own ways to relax our minds and body.

Don’t let the added pressure of stress be a factor that deters you from taking that “me” time. Instead, relieve that stress in a positive, productive way. We are emotional beings and need support, not just from others, but for ourselves as well.

Be smart and be safe. Let your body rest and feel free to be lazy once in a while. Your body will welcome it as much as mine is welcoming midday naps now.
