Editorial: There are still good people in this world

Despite the everyday outlooks that society is portrayed as because of several negative connotations, there are still good people in this world.

As a member of the news media, I often write about the happenings that are taking place. Unfortunately, this ranges from the heartbreaking story to the negativity of crimes being committed to the trials and tribulations people have to unfortunately relive in court cases. But there are times where the positives still highlight who we are as people. And while working multiple jobs on the same day at Charles City County’s Farmers’ Market, it was clear that there are people who are true to their roots and bonds when it comes to being good-natured. And that’s what makes my heart smile.

The first good-natured thing that happened was upon my arrival to the farmers’ market, one of Charles City’s Park and Recreation staff members assisted with putting up my canopy tent. A few minutes later, a student-athlete of mine arrived and spent the day with me at the booth (on a weekend no less). As the day began progressing, our booth was pretty active for a majority of the day. People walked over and spoke, asking about items we had for sale and the purpose on why we were getting rid of them. And even if people were not interested in them, we had a donation box that people contributed to the athletics’ program.

Our world can be a cruel place at times, there is no doubt about that. But our world can also be a place of blessings and love. While most of us will never understand what we each individually go through, I can tell you that the selfless acts of people on Saturday was a refreshing sign that there are people who want to assist and help others.

So, I just want to say thank you to those who contributed through purchases, donations, set-up, and speaking with me and my student-athlete. A lot of wonderful lessons were learned at the Charles City’s Farmers’ Market that are priceless in value.

Let’s allow the positives to thrive more than the negatives. Things won’t be perfect and there will people who won’t understand, but if you are a catalyst to the good in one person, than that’s one more person than before that you helped.
