Seminar held to encourage young readers in Charles City
Charles City County educators and community leaders met on June 17 to identify resources to support students as a community of readers.
Charles City High School English Teacher Lakishia Bannister led the discussion with the topic of “Reading is Knowledge,” pushing parents to promote model reading by choosing selections the child would like. Kara Canaday, VTEC Tribal Liaison, promoted the importance of book availability and providing books for the child at home.
Heritage Public Library Youth Services Director Elizabeth Dzula commented about several literacy programs offered at the library. She also said that books are available at “Big Little Libraries” at other locations that include the Ruthville Gymnasium and in front of the Charles City School Board building.
Charles City County Public Schools Social Worker Stephanie Leek concluded by saying that books are a great escape and provides mental health breaks for students. She added that students reading with parents or trusted adults can reduce feelings of sadness and depression.
