Commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 events

Above, more than 300 flags in front of New Kent County’s Administration Building represent the lives sacrificed by rescue and fire personnel in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Friday morning ceremony saw more than 200 people attend to honor those who paid the ultimate price, as well as those who assisted with the events of that day in several locations. Below, New Kent Fire and Rescue Chief Rick Opett provides his recollection as he was deployed to assist in northern Virginia on the day of the attacks. At bottom, students from New Kent High School as well as Bridging Communities Career and Technical Center read the names of every emergency personnel worker who gave their lives rescuing people.
