Little Free Pantry in New Kent aims to assist those in need

The Little Free Pantry in New Kent provides items that include food, clothing, and essentials to assist families in need.
With several people struggling with necessities and essentials during the COVID-19 pandemic, a community idea was created to assist citizens in New Kent County.
The Little Free Pantry was created to assist people to get items of need before heading to a market due to lack of finances.
Located near the New Kent County Government Complex at 7911 Courthouse Way, the idea was originated by individuals who were concerned about people who became unemployed and the aging population who could not afford key essentials. The pantry is usually stocked, with items from dry goods to cleaning items, toiletries and more. The theme of the pantry is, “Take what you need, leave what you can.”
District 3 supervisor Patricia Paige said the goal was to assist people and not shame them, something that has hindered those who have been misplaced due to the unforeseen circumstances caused by the pandemic.
“This is neighbors wanting to help neighbors,” she said. “The pantry was put in a place where people can still have pride and get the things they need.”
The pantry operates on donation and is no cost to the county. With many people in New Kent aging and others recovering from the pandemic, the location was chosen to show to show that people shouldn’t be hesitant to ask for help. Paige is hopeful that the older people and younger generation will not show hesitancy or be ashamed to get items from the pantry.
The pantry is available at any time. Those donating are asked not to place damage goods inside of the pantry.
