Above, New Kent Circuit Court Clerk Amy Crump (far left) is joined by Kent McBrien (second from left), New Kent Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott Renick and County Administrator Rodney Hathaway during an Oct. 1 presentation that saw the return of the original New Kent Courthouse wax seal. The seal was taken in 1862 by McBrien’s great-great-grandfather Edward Brown as the area was burned during the Civil War. McBrien elected to return the item after 159 years to its home, saying that he believes it was the rightful place for it. Below are closeups of both the front and the backside of the original seal.
