Statewide honor for victim witness program

Karen Mortenson (center), the Victims’ Rights Advocate for both New Kent and Charles City County, was recognized at the Sixth Annual Unsung Heroes Award Ceremony on Apr. 28. Mortensen was commented on her relentless support and care for crime victims, guiding them through the criminal justice process and assisting them with meeting their needs. She is also essential in the opening of the Bridges of Change Domestic Violence Shelter, a ten-bed facility that houses victims and provides them with food, a place to stay, and job training opportunities. Mortensen is joined by Charles City Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Tyler Klink (left) and New Kent County Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott Renick.
