Above, former New Kent County Sheriff J. Joe McLaughlin Jr. (right) received the Lifetime Achievement award at the New Kent Public Safety Awards Gala held Saturday night at Colonial Downs. The event recognized several local contributors to public safety, including McLaughlin who dedicated 42 years in the field to helping the community. Below, New Kent Fire and Rescue Chief Richard Opett was the recipient of the Founder’s Award for Selfless Service.
